How to Find a Good Interior Designer?
Your home is your haven. A well done home is a treat to owner and guests alike. To get that special look for your home an interior designer is the person to get. However, to find a good interior designer can be intimidating.
It has to be someone who understands your design needs and budget, and finally takes it further than your expectations. This is no easy task. Keeping a few criteria in mind you could engage the designer of your choice.
Tip 1: Location
While looking for an interior decorator, it is best to look for one in your local area. This can be beneficial as they will be easily reachable. You can also take local references for the work they have done in the neighbourhood and checkout their work firsthand.
Tip 2: Experience
Ideally the interior designer should have at least 5-6 years of experience in this field. This will give you confidence in their skills and expertise. You will also be able gauge their versatility.
Tip 3: Checkout their Portfolio
Good interior designers maintain a portfolio of the work they have done. They even have a website where they display their past projects, skills, testimonials, etc. Maintaining a website and portfolio is a sign of professionalism.
Tip 4: Latest Trends and Designs
If you are well versed in the latest trends and designs, you could check out how inclined the interior designer is about them as well. Alternatively if there is a style you like, you could have visual examples and discuss it with the decorator.
Tip 5: Get Recommendations
Referrals from friends, neighbours or family are usually very good. Usually if the experience of working with the decorator has been good, they get referrals. But be sure to apply the other criteria. Interior designing is a matter of personal taste, so make sure you visit the projects done by them.
Tip 6: Compare prices
Don’t settle with the first interior designer that you like. For the work required, try and get detailed quotes from at least 2-3 independent designers. This will give you an idea if they are overcharging you. In the event of large differences you could ask for clarifications.
Tip 7: Discuss Timelines, budgets and payment mode
Prior to starting the project, discuss how long it will take. Be sure to estimate realistic timelines. A good interior decorator, will give you a time bound plan with estimates.

If the project is divided into smaller parts, you can both view the progress.

Mode of payment, say if it is credit card, be sure the decorator has a machine in place. Strange as it may sound in the writers experience he travelled 20 kms and found the decorators machine was not working. These are signs you probably need to look for another decorator.

Finding a good designer will make that dream look all the more easily achievable. So spend some time finding a good one.
