Cozy Little Nest – Interior Design for Small Spaces
If you have rented/ purchased a small apartment or home, it doesn’t mean the death of the designer in you. To keep your cozy nest cozy, here are some simple tips.
Keep the wall colours simple and monochromatic. This will help make the space look larger. Wall paper and prints could make the room look even smaller. Use this tip, when you purchase fabric for your furniture and curtains as well.

Light it up: Allow as much natural light as possible. In darker corners, light up using CFL lights. A well lit house keeps it looking roomier.

Shelve it: Use few large pieces of furniture that you can use for storage, rather than several small ones. This will open up space and help you organize things better.

Clean it up: Living in small spaces means you only keep things that are absolutely necessary. Recycle, donate articles you don’t need. This will help a lot of picking after and cleaning time. Because unlike in larger spaces you cannot afford to leave things lying about, without tripping over.

Store things room specific: We tend to leave bathrooms as unused storage space. They can effectively store towels, extra laundry/toiletries. This frees up wardrobe space for daily wear items.

Multiple use furniture: In small spaces it makes sense where a dining table works as a study table between meals. Baby chairs can be substituted by a rug and some pillows. A low bed is both safe and multi purpose, as a place to sleep by night and lounge by day. This way you don’t spend on activity specific furniture that clutters your home.

See through material: Glass top in place of wooden top tables, sliding doors with translucent surfaces, help reflect light into the room, rather than absorb it. Similarly sheer curtain fabric that cover but do not block out light are ideas to make a room look more lighted.

Purchase small artifacts, paintings depicting open spaces, fresh potted herbs and bed linen in plain fresh colours. All of these minute touches add to making a small space look larger and beautiful.
