Cook-a-looking good

Modular kitchen have steadily started becoming a mainstay in Indian Homes. The spoons and the knives, the saucepan and kadais stay tucked in and neat giving a feel of openness.
Modular kitchens don’t come cheap; prices range from Rs. 90,000 to 8-10 lacs. Of course, this depends on the size of the kitchen, the materials and accessories used. This is why while a modular kitchen is on every homeowner`s wish list they scout for the best deal within their budget.

Income Tax Benefits

Modular kitchens are generally made in pre-laminated plywood for easy maintenance or particleboard with PVC bonding. This makes it water resistant and splinter proof. They are also fire resistant. The shell is usually made in particle wood, while the shutters can be made in particle wood/MDF (medium density fiber board, which is denser than particleboard) or timber. The wire frames within are usually powder coated. Spring-loaded hinges that are self-closing make the kitchen relatively free of pests.

The accessories used such as hinges and frames also add to the cost of the kitchen; it is important that they be of good quality, since they need to sustain the wear and tear and heavy usage over a period of time.

In the event you shift, you can dissemble your kitchen and install it in your new space if you so wish.

Armed with this knowledge it is important to visit providers of modular kitchens. Veneta Cucine, Gilma, Elenza, and Schmitt Hom are some of the players. Several Interior Decorators will also build a modular kitchen for you. Some customers prefer to use carpenters who do this on an individual basis to cut costs.

It would be worthwhile to run a search on established players, since you could come upon on reviews by previous customers. Some issues include order-to-installation time and after sales service. Since a modular kitchen is almost like an appliance these parameters are critical while selecting a supplier. Also check for any warranty they might provide.

A visit to their showrooms will also give you an idea about the cost. For instance, while my spouse and I loved the designs and multitude of storage ideas at Veneta Cucine, with a starting price of 4 lacs it was way over our budget.

Once you select your supplier an engineer will come and measure your kitchen. He/she will provide an estimate based on the design you have selected. If your kitchen already has a granite top, and cement partings the cost will reduce. However, some providers insist on their counter tops with no supports below. Chimneys and hobs are optional. Again some providers insist it is part of their package. Once the order is placed it would typically take 30-60 days from order to installation, while some may take more. You could also start with the basics and keep adding shelves and compartments as you go along.

Here’s wishing you happy modular kitchen hunting and bon appe’tit.
